Steengoed Maastriathlon T100, Kinrooi Belgium, 7 Jul 2026

Preparation

Second race of the season, wasn't feeling to sure about my run leading into this race, as I hadn't even ran 18k straight so far this year! I was planning to just swim my regular 70.3 race pace, bike I was aiming to keep the power around 250-260W and on the run I was hoping to be able to run around 4:40/k.

Location

Registration, swim, T1/T2 and finish line are all located near "Het Bastion" in Kinrooi. So from a logistics point of view this race is very easy. The swim is a two loop lake setup with Australian exit, the bike course was a flat 8 loop setup and the run course was also a flat 3 loop setup.

Swim 0:32:38 (3/32)

  • Started a little of the side to avoid the washing machine during the mass start. Got into a good rhythm and most of the time avoided traffic, from the first turning buoy onwards there was much less traffic and I found some good legs to sit on. When jumping in for the 2nd loop we were with a group of around 4, I sat in for a while and noticed that ahead of us there was another group at, I estimated, less than 25m. Sitting on the feet felt so easy that I opted to make an effort to bridge to that other group. Before the first turning buoy I managed to close the gap and found some other feet to sit on. In the last stretch home a faster swimmer overtook us and I jumped onto his/her feet till the swim exit. Overall the whole swim felt relaxed as most of the time I could sit on the feet of others.
  • 1:39/100m pace, so slightly above my normal 70.3 swim pace, within the top 9% of my AG.

T1 0:02:07 (12/32)

  • Bit of a slow transition, but nothing special.

Bike 2:01:00 (5/32)

  • Lots of corners in this circuit so hard to get into a good rhythm. Was able to follow the pacing and nutrition plan, keeping my power in check and every hour: (1/2rd of 750ml bottle (water + 2x50g gels)) & 1x750 ml iso + hydro tab, plus I think I had 3 salt capsules additionally on the entire bike course. Over halfway we got some short but intense rain shower which made it tricky in the corners, but luckily I didn't see any crashes. Only negative note was some asshole that thought it was a good idea to throw his bottle away right across of my front wheel, pissed me off as I could have easily crashed because of it.
  • Top 15% in my AG, averaging 37.2km/h, NP of 250W.

T2 0:01:56 (11/32)

  • Uneventful transition, legs didn't feel to knackered jumping of the bike.

Run 1:23:06 (15/32)

  • 3 relative flat laps, I started of conservatively trying to stay around 4:45/k pace. Managed to stay on this pace and near the end of the 2nd lap I started to close in to some tall guy, for quite a while I was gaining on him but really little by little, so I decided to put some effort in to finally close the gap and give me some free draft on the run. After sitting on his heels for a bit recovering I closed the gap to another athlete. The last 3 k I tried to increase the pace a little to bring it home, looking back at the splits I managed to get the pace down to around 4:31/k for the last full k.
  • Top 46% of my AG, 4:41/k pace so around what I was aiming for.

Overall 4:00:49 (8/32)

  • Top 25% in my AG, so not to bad afterall. Happy how my race went, especially as I could increase my pace during the run near the end and didn't had to walk any of it.
