Preparation

No significant injuries leading into this race. Targets for this race were:
Swim: 18:00
Bike: 1h10 (as the course map seemed to be having a ton of corners)
Run: 42:00 (4:12/k pace)

Crazy race morning! When putting my race wheels on the day before I noticed that my tires looked pretty worn out so I decided to put new tires on. When packing my bike on race morning I noticed that the rear tire pressure was a little low so I brought the pressure up to race pressure. However arriving at the race venue the pressure was down again. Trying to change the inner tube I noticed that somehow the tool to loosen my valve extenders got lost from my toolkit! Luckily one of the tri teams had one laying around that I could use. Stressing and time crunched I changed the tube and prepped my kit and bike. I didn't even notice till after the race that I had attached the bib number upside down on my race belt!

Location

Registration, swim, T1/T2 and finish line are all located near "Het Bastion" in Kinrooi. So from a logistics point of view this race is very easy. The swim is a two loop lake setup with Australian exit, the bike course was a flat 4 loop setup and the run course was also a flat 4 loop setup.

Swim 0:17:31 (6/75)

  • Opted to start off relaxed to avoid blowing up in the swim again and stayed on the outside to remain out of traffic. It was pretty crowded till the first turn buoy. After that I had mostly clear water and got into a decent rhythm without going into the red. The second loop closed the gap to an athlete in front of me, but he kept on swimming way of course so I had to bump into him a few times to notch him into the right direction.
  • 1:45/100m pace, not brilliant but not bad neither. 6th AG time and 19th overall time.

T1 0:01:46 (13/75)

  • Again a hard time finding the velcro tape to open up the wetsuit but a volunteer was so kind to help me out.

Bike 0:59:13 (5/75)

  • On the map the bike course looks slow with a lot of corners, in reality it felt pretty fast. Strong winds on race day made some stretches tuff and on others I was flying without having to put down much watts. Tried to keep the watts in check and don't do anything to crazy. During the 2nd lap I felt something stinging in my chest, I thought it was some empty gel I had stuffed there but when looking under my tri suit I saw some bug stuck there that had stung me. Stopped at a volunteer to help remove the bug and off I went again. Hurt like a b*** for a full lap but then it started to fade away. The last 2 laps I tried to lower the wattage a little to keep my heart rate in check.
  • 5th AG and 6th overall time, averaging 38.4km/h, NP of 272W.

T2 0:00:58 (3/75)

  • Quick transition with elastic laces, legs felt okish jumping of the bike into the run.

Run 0:44:05 (19/75)

  • Basically 4 times out and back along the lake, only problem was the wind. On the way out you felt like you were barely moving! Tried to keep a steady pace without paying to much attention to my watch. Not tooooo much people passed me so I felt happy with my run.
  • 19th AG and 28th overall time. 4:20/k pace so probably around what I am currently capable of, I really need to start adding speed work to my trainings! 2 minutes over the target I had set but looking back at what pace I ran I think that is what I'm currently capable of.

Overall 2:03:35 (8/75)

  • 8th AG and 13th overall, but more importantly I was happy with how I felt during the entire race. A controlled swim, a strong first 2 laps followed by 2 controlled laps on the bike and run to my current abilities.

Result
